Chagrin Falls Popcorn Shop

This is a HDR of the Chagrin Falls Popcorn Shop.  I captured this on a recent trip to the falls when I trying out a new ND Filter.

From Wikipedia:

The Chagrin Falls Popcorn Shop, established in 1875, is a
popcorn and candy shop located in the village of Chagrin Falls,
Cuyahoga County, Ohio. It was originally established as a retail
showcase for The Pride of the Falls flour mill, which was powered
by the Chagrin River.[1] The store opened a second location at
Shaker Square in 2005.

Nelson-Kennedy Ledges State Park

The boys and I made a trip to Nelson-Kennedy Ledges State Park in Northeast Ohio located near the Village of Hiram over the weekend. The park was very busy with lots of vistors. The park is small but it’s attraction are the rugged cliffs and ledges. The boys and I had a great time and I took the camera, of course. We will be going back!

Photos of the hike are below, click to enlarge.

The HOLLYWOOD TOWER Hotel

This is The HOLLYWOOD TOWER Hotel at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.  It is also known as The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror!  This shot was taken last summer on our vacation during Star Wars Weekends and this is the backside of the tower shot from a parking lot not normally open to the public.  They had this area open for the huge Star Wars Gift Shop.

Everett Road Covered Bridge

This past Sunday I meetup with a group of photographers that I found out about on Meetup  at the Everett Road Covered Bridge in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.  There were approx. 6 of us there.

The intended purpose of the Meetup was to do HDR Photography of the bridge.  We were there for about 2 hours and took lots of photos.  You can see the ones I took and processed on this page.

I enjoyed it and look forward to meeting up with these folks in the future.

Trey Ratcliff Speaks at Kent State University

On Thursday last week Trey Ratcliff came to Kent State University to participate in their Presidential Speaker Series.    Trey presented “The Future of Digital Arts and the Internet“. Trey discussed the current state of digital art and the internet.

Trey runs the #1 travel photography blog at www.stuckincustoms.com where he receives more than 500,000 monthly page views.  His photos have also seen more than 50 million views.

Trey brought HDR Photography to the masses and has appeared on numerous television networks and other outlets discussing it.  To learn more about HDR you can get a complete tutorial on his website at http://www.stuckincustoms.com/hdr-tutorial/

At the conclusion of his presentation the floor was opened for questions.  At this time people asked about his photography and other things.  One of the questions concerned composition.   Trey stated that he divides photo into horizontal thirds and every third must be interesting, otherwise the photo is boring.  For example, in landscapes the sky is usually 1/3, so you need to make it interesting, i.e. blue skies are boring.

To see some of my HDR Work you can look on my blog at http://tjpowell.net/category/hdr/

Below are photos I took at the speech.

On the morning of the speech Trey went to Severance Hall in Cleveland and took this photo. It was featured on his blog the next day at http://www.stuckincustoms.com/2012/03/30/nikon-d800-first-photo/

At this point Trey was talking about the new up and coming website Pinterest and how this site that is driving artists nuts due to copyright

Hike at the Ledges Trail

Over the weekend the boys and I went on a hike at the Ledges Trail in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.   It was a wonderful warm Spring Day in March.  The park is located in Ohio between the cities of Akron and Cleveland and follows the Cuyahoga River Valley.

I used an Amod AGL3080 GPS Data Logger to track our location and ultimately geotag the photos.  When I got home I used the “Map Module” in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4 and Jeffrey Friedl’s Geoencoding Plugin for Lightroom to add Location Data to the photos.  I have found that the Jeffrey’s Plugin works better then the built-in features of LR for the following reasons:

  • The GPS Logger I am using does not use GPX and must be converted before Lightroom will be able to use it.  Jeffrey’s plugin has options to convert it on the fly and not require any additional effort on my part.
  • The reverse Geoencoding in Jeffrey’s Plugin works better and easier than the native one built into LR and allows you to encode a large number of photos with one click as a batch

Below you will find screen captures of the LR Map Module showing the GPS Track and photo locations.
