Capturing the Thrill: Twinsburg Tigers vs. North Royalton Bears Girls Basketball Doubleheader
Hey everyone, T.J. Powell here, your go-to Cleveland-area sports photographer with a passion for freezing those high-energy moments on the court. Today, January 31, 2026, I had the absolute pleasure of shooting the Suburban League showdown between the Twinsburg Tigers and the North Royalton Bears at North Royalton High School. It was a classic doubleheader—JV followed by varsity—and let me tell you, the gym was buzzing with that raw, competitive spirit that makes high school hoops so addictive. As someone who’s been behind the lens for countless games, this one delivered plenty of intensity, heart, and some standout plays that I was lucky enough to capture.
I arrived early for the JV tip-off at 11:30 AM, camera gear in tow, ready to document every hustle and heart-pounding second. The Bears came out firing on all cylinders, dominating from the jump. Their defense was suffocating, holding the Tigers to just 16 points while racking up 45 of their own. It was a statement win for North Royalton, showcasing their young talent’s grit and teamwork. I snagged some killer shots of fast breaks and tough rebounds—nothing beats the look of determination on these athletes’ faces as they battle for every possession.
Then came the varsity matchup at 1:00 PM, and the energy ramped up even more. The Tigers, entering with a strong 15-4 record and a perfect 10-0 streak against the Bears since 2019, lived up to the hype. North Royalton, sitting at 4-13, put up a valiant fight, but Twinsburg’s experience and poise shone through. They pulled away for a solid 52-37 victory, extending their dominance in this rivalry. From my spot courtside, I witnessed some epic moments: a Twinsburg guard driving through traffic for a contested layup, fierce defensive stands under the basket, and those split-second steals that turned the tide. One of my favorites from the set is a shot of a Tigers player elevating for a shot amid a sea of white jerseys, ponytail flying, with the “BEARS” banner looming in the background—pure drama.
What I love about games like this is the contrast: the Bears’ JV squad owning the court, only for the Tigers to flip the script in varsity. It’s a reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in basketball, and how these young women pour everything into representing their schools. The crowd was engaged, the coaches animated, and the players left it all out there. If you’re a fan of either team, or just love the game, these photos tell the story better than words ever could.
All the images from both games are now up in my online gallery at https://www.tjpowellphotography.com/Sports/High-School-Basketball-Girls. A big shoutout to @NoRoNation, @NRAthletics, @TwinsburgTigers, @SuburbanLgOH , and all the other local supporters who make these events special. Can’t wait for the next one—stay tuned for more from the sidelines!
Until next time, keep shooting (or in my case, keep clicking)
