How to Shoot Great Basketball Photos in Low Light

I captured this photo of Ricardo Ruffin going for a layup at the Twinsburg High School v Chagrin Falls. Looking back this is the best basketball photo I have captured. The pose, determination, clarity and the coach standing in the background make it fabulous!

When I walked into the Chagrin Falls gym I was concerned that I would not be able to get good photos. The gym is very orange and dark. It also had floresent lights that flickered and caused banding on the photos when using the Electronic Shutter.

I shot this photo with a Canon EOS R7 with the Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM. I normally shoot with an electronic shutter, but for this gym I needed to goto a mechanical shutter with Ant-Flicker turned on to eliminate the banding from the lighting. It was dim in the gym so I went to ISO 10000. I shot wide open at f/2.8 with a shutter speed of 1/1000s.

I processed the photo using Adobe LightRoom Classic and I was able to adjust the basic settings and reduce the noise.

What do you think of this photo? Did I capture the emotion? Action?
