I’m excited to announce that I’ll be presenting “Beyond the Action: Creating Sports Photographs That Tell the Story of the Game” at the Pixel Photo Club’s September meeting.

The presentation will take place on Monday, September 28, from 6:00 to 7:45 p.m. at the Twinsburg Public Library.

Sports photography is often associated with freezing the biggest play—the winning goal, a dramatic catch or an athlete crossing the finish line. Those moments matter, but they are only part of the story.

A complete visual story also includes anticipation, emotion, relationships, atmosphere and the moments between plays. It might be an athlete preparing quietly, teammates celebrating together, a coach reacting from the sideline or spectators responding to what is happening in front of them. Even the weather and surroundings can become important parts of the story.

During the presentation, I’ll discuss how I approach photographing a sporting event and how I look beyond peak action to capture images that help viewers understand what the game felt like. I’ll also share examples of my work and the thinking behind some of the photographs.

Whether you’re an experienced photographer, just learning to use a camera or simply interested in visual storytelling, I hope you’ll join us. The program is open to adults and teens.
