Every year around Independence Day, I like to revisit one of my favorite photography topics—capturing fireworks. It has become something of a tradition, and I hope these tips help you create better images the next time you head out to photograph a fireworks display.
One of my favorite places to photograph fireworks is Walt Disney World. Not only are the shows spectacular, but the parks also provide outstanding vantage points. Whenever possible, I like to include a recognizable landmark in the foreground of my composition. Doing so gives the photograph a sense of place and immediately tells the viewer where the image was captured. Disney’s nighttime spectaculars are ideal for this, as the fireworks are choreographed around iconic park landmarks.
Recommended Equipment
You don’t need an extensive amount of gear, but a few essentials will make a significant difference:
- A camera with full manual controls
- A sturdy tripod
- A cable release or remote shutter release
A tripod is essential because even the slightest camera movement during a long exposure will soften the image. A remote release allows you to trigger the shutter without introducing vibration.
Camera Settings
Once your camera is securely mounted on the tripod and you’ve composed your shot, I recommend starting with these settings:
- Exposure Mode: Bulb
- ISO: 100
- Aperture: f/11
Bulb mode allows the shutter to remain open for as long as you hold the shutter release, giving you complete control over the length of the exposure.
Capturing the Fireworks
As the show begins, open the shutter just before the firework launches so you capture the trail as it climbs into the sky. Keep the shutter open while the burst expands, then close it as the glowing trails begin to fade.
Most of my exposures fall in the 6- to 10-second range, although the exact timing depends on the pace and intensity of the show. With experience, you’ll learn to judge when a burst has reached its peak and when it’s time to end the exposure.
Don’t be afraid to experiment. Every fireworks display is different, and slight adjustments to your timing or composition can produce dramatically different results.
Below are some of my favorite fireworks photographs from Walt Disney World. I hope they provide a little inspiration for your own photography.
I’d love to hear what you think, and if you try these techniques, I’d enjoy seeing your results.
Enjoy, and have a safe and happy Fourth of July!
